Self Storage Moving Game
Posted by admin on Jul 6, 2009
My husband and I recently decided to move to England for a couple years. We were ready for a new adventure and my husband got accepted to a graduate school program there. We put our beloved house of a decade on the market, rather than try to rent it while we were away. Being a landlord from that far away was not appealing. And we are not sure where we want to head after England anyway. Self storage was at the top of our list, as we thought about what we wanted to do with our belongings while we were in London. After interviewing several realtors and finally deciding on the one we liked, we realized self storage was going to become part of our lives for quite a while.
Our realtor wasted no time evaluating things and jotting a list down for us. She began with, “I like to get down to business and tell it like it is. If you are sensitive, let me know. Otherwise, I am ready with a list of things you need to do.” We let her know that we were prepared to get down to business. The woman is brilliant, because she spilled forth the thing you should always remember when you put your house on the market. She told us to remember that we are selling this house and that it now belongs to someone else. “Once you realize that, it makes it much easier to get the house ready.” Long before we packed up the big stuff for London, we were going to need Self storage for lots and lots of things the realtor said should not be hanging about. She told us to take down all personal pictures and make the bookshelves only one third full. She said the house should be like a blank canvas on which prospective buyers can place their ideas. So, we were told to replace our red and orange modern duvet cover with an all white ensemble in the master bedroom. That was only the beginning. By the time she was done with the list, we needed another house to put all the things from our house that someone else might not like.
We rented a unit with a self storage company about ten blocks from the house. I feel like we were constantly unloading things there, in the weeks we got the house ready. A few days before the open house, the guys from the Victorian rental place brought in the stuffy furniture and they took our comfy stuff to the self storage place. Luckily, it did not take too long to sell the house, so we could then focus on what we would put in storage, what we would take to London and what we would sell on Craigslist. We decided to put the things we were going to leave behind in a self storage place close to where my parents live. We had to fit in a weekend trip there, in the comfort of a large moving truck, to move everything into storage. So, we had to move things into a self storage place while we were selling the house, then had to sort through everything to decide what would go with us, go to the new storage unit, or be sold in a yard sale. It was a lot of schlepping.
Storage Pods Are Moving Up
Posted by admin on Jun 21, 2009
Storage pods have been around for a number of years but recently the common population has started using them more. Since we as Americans are always on the move and it is rather challenging with day to day life to make a huge move more and more people have been using storage pods. What is a storage pod you say? Even though there are a number of companies that have pods the concept is the same. You order a pod and they will come and drop it off at your house. Normally after it gets dropped off you have approximately 30 days to pack up everything into it you would like. The companies offer storage space in their building if you can not have it dropped off in front of your new home immediately.
One huge upside to using any sort of storage pod is that it is cheaper than having to get a moving truck and it’s also a lot more convenient as you don not have to coordinate a huge move in a short amount of time. Most storage pod companies will just charge you a flat rate in the neighborhood of $200 rather than charge you per day. Also when choosing to drop it off at your new house they don not charge too much extra. Depending on the customers situation the cost can be anyway from $500 to $2500 depending on how many and how long they need. Pods are not used just for people that are looking to move. Pods have several uses besides just moving. There are several projects that people use pods for include interior and exterior projects and temporary storage. For the best rate try calling around to different companies that offer the pods you can usually find one that is cheaper then most or compare the prices to them and they will sometimes offer you a cheaper price then their competitors.
Several moving companies do not take extra care of your personal stuff as you would like. This causes for you to sometimes find your glass and other fragile stuff to end up broken. Unfortunately most of the moving companies will not reimburse you and just say it was because of the way it was packed. With the use of storage pods you can be sure that you protect your items since you are doing the work yourself. By using a storage pod it also makes it easier on you and your items as they are placed directly on the ground. Trying a pod may turn out to be a great choice and you may use it several times in the future.
Self storage facilities
Posted by admin on May 27, 2009
Self storage is nothing but a shorter from of the term self service storage. It is just another term for a mini warehouse or a mini storehouse. Such storage houses are recently being preferred over the traditional warehouses. The popularity of storage houses is such that people are always in demand of place to store their commercial or personal belongings and rush after commercial agents to fetch them a place for storing their goods. However, since the demand has been on a rise, the warehouses of the past have become a luxury which can not be afforded by all consumers in market. For such small and medium sized aspirants of storage space, self storage facilities are a boon.
The facility manager of the self storage is one that provides commercial space to enterprises and establishment and even common people who take place on lease from them. The space is completely at the discretion of the tenant and can be put to personal, private or commercial or even public use at the option of the tenant. They are basically partitioned or separated ‘units’ which are weather proof, leased to those who desire them. The facility is so called since it is the whims and fancies of the tenants who decide what use the place is to be put.
In law it implies that the possession of the goods are always with the tenant who keeps them in the facility and the facility does not interfere with the use of the space. However where the right to lien comes into play, the master of the facility may exercise possessor’s rights on the goods stored. Lien is a right in law of the custodian of goods who can detain them in the case of non payment of his charges. In the traditional warehouses, the master of the facility had the right to enter the storage house any time he liked. On the other hand, in storage facility the tenant is the sole authorized person to enter the unit at his disposal. As an obvious implication, the facility which manages the storage house will never be held responsible to any of the affairs pertaining the storage and removal of goods at any time. However, it depends from one legal jurisdiction to other as to what can be the liability of the self storage operator in cases where the unit is used for illegal purpose.
One can be rest assure of the secrecy of the utility of the goods in the unit. The facility does not concern itself with the factual application or utilization of the available space once it is rented by a consumer. In fact the access to the unit is maintained through a computer supported program which allows only authorized person to pass through doors. Technically the key of the unit lies only with the tenant and not the warehouse master. Security is further enhanced by use of security cameras.
Another benefit in self storage is that one may rent only that space which he needs and no space is left unused. No space is wasted in the process which would have otherwise left unused in old fashioned warehouses. One danger with such facility is that it may be terminated with a short duration notice irrespective of time it has been rented.
The popularity of these can be ascertained by the simple fact that self storage now forms ten per cent of the total warehouse space in the USA. They also come with the facility of climate control to store perishable goods like vegetables. Lately the self storage managers have also started giving facility to transport the goods in and out of the units. Clearly, self storage is the face of the warehouses of the future. They are becoming popular day by day all across the globe. To add to its success the facility owner also cherish them because they are free from the general hassles of warehouse management like evacuation of tenant and looking for a new tenant in case of disputes.
Self storage: The Better Way to Move
Posted by admin on Mar 14, 2009
The self storage innovation has been a boon for both the entrepreneurs and the customers. The former benefited because here was new business model in home transportation which afforded good business on account of being able to offer attractive services to the clients. Self storage made the life of the customer easy as the problems associated with moving were much lesser. How could this become reality? By providing smaller sized containers which could fit in a customer’s driveway or parking lot, the providers got rid of the problem of space and the associated road blocks that a big container caused in a neighborhood. Because the transportation containers were so small, the self storage company could leave it overnight, one or two days at the customer’s residence for him or her to load the container at leisure. No fixed rushed schedule meant lesser stress for the client as well as the provider. The schedule of delivery at the new place of residence could now also be decided by the client. This flexibility gave the client time to hunt for a new house at the new place, clean it up and then prepare to receive the belongings. A delay in getting a house by a month or two? Such a situation could now be taken care of by depositing the entire luggage inside the sealed container at secured company warehouses. The warehouses are designed to withstand all spectrum threats which include manmade threats such as burglary as well as the natural hazards of storms, rain and snow.
In addition, the sizes of the self storage containers could be varied, customers could order only those sizes which they required resulting in savings. This flexibility had not been available previously with traditional packers who had standard sized trucks. By having assorted container sizes, clients could now match the items together in one container and other similar type of items in another container. For instance, all furniture could be packed in one container, while all garage items in another. Air conditioned self storage units form the high end of the self storage business for those requiring climate controlled transportation of delicate items. The entrepreneurs too gained considerably as they could now tailor different packages to suit all sizes of wallet and thus provide the financial flexibility to their clients. This financial flexibility meant that more business could then be generated by the entrepreneur. Hence, it can be said the self storage solutions have been a win win situation for both the client and the provider.
Portable Storage Units and Moving Containers

Portable storage is quickly displacing classic self-storage as the best way to store and move your possessions. Why is this happening? Because this is an entirely new way to get your stuff moved and coordinate bringing your belongings together at a distant location. And the best part is that you don’t have to drive the truck.
Portable Storage Units for Moving
It is very stressful to try to move and get everything packed when you need it packed. The movers have you on a tight schedule and it costs money if you are not ready. And nothing can remove all the stress from your move, you can make life a ton easier by using a portable storage unit to manage parts of this event.
With a portable storage container, you simply call the storage company to arrange for the delivery of your unit at a set date before the move. Most people hold on to their portable storage containers for two to four weeks, but you can keep it for as long as you need in order to accommodate your own schedule.
The weather-safe portable storage unit is then delivered to your front drive, where you can fill it as you go. This helps you get the things that can go into deep storage packed away way before the actual move. When the real moving day comes, you already have the less necessary things packed way in the back and you can add the more day to day stuff in. Then the unit is picked up by the portable storage company driver team. When you’re all one with your unpacking, you simply call them up and have the portable storage container removed.
Are you planning a move to a temporary location? The storage company can store your stuff for a long period of time until you actually need it delivered. Very easy.
Portable Storage Containers for Long-Term Storage
Whether you’ve moved from a larger home to a smaller one or you just have more possessions than you have room for, chances are you’ll want to de-clutter at some time in your life. But just because you don’t have room for something doesn’t mean you want to sell it or throw it away. And while non-portable storage units are always an option, the convenience of a portable storage unit makes it an ideal choice.
To use it for storage, simply have a portable storage container delivered to your home, and take the time you need to fill it with your unneeded (but still wanted) items. When it’s full, the container will be delivered to a climate-controlled storage warehouse– and your household clutter will be out from underfoot. Do you need access to your portable storage unit while it’s stored? Call to have the unit re-delivered, or even visit it in the warehouse yourself.
Planning a Self Storage Move
Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2009
There always comes a time when you have more things than you know what to do with. When this happens, one of your best options is to acquire self storage; especially if you are moving to a new home. But while self storage is simple and easy to use for moving, there are still some things to consider awhile down the road. Want to keep from rushing and stressing on moving day? Take a look at the following self storage schedule.
One Month or More Ahead
A month or two before you move, you will want to start taking a look at your things. Generally, you will have some items, such as old clothes or unwanted furniture, that you will want to get rid of. Look into planning a yard sale to sell anything that you do not want to move or place in self storage. Take time to sort carefully through your possessions… and be ruthless about it if you can. After all, the more unneeded items filling up your self storage, the more work involved for you.
A Couple of Weeks Ahead
Two weeks before you move your home, you should have sorted through your possessions, selling or giving away what you do not plan to keep. Now you have to focus on the administrative side of the move. First, you will need to look into a moving company to move your things, and a self storage company to store whatever you cannot move. For shorter moves, you can contract both at once by using a portable self storage company, which will both move and store your belongings. With portable self storage, you can also arrange for the unit further ahead of your move.
When looking at self storage companies, be sure to do your research carefully and choose the best one for you. When looking through the phone book, you will probably come across dozens and dozens of companies. Look over their policies to be sure they offer the appropriate combination of security, insurance, climate control, etc., for your possessions.
One Week Ahead
At this point, your possessions should be sorted into “store” and “move” piles. Now it is time to get all of these items organized. If using portable self storage for the move (or simply for storage), you can place the items in the storage unit at your leisure, leaving plenty of space in your home for packing and sorting. If, however, you are using traditional movers or traditional self storage, the best thing is to set aside a special place for items to be stored.
With portable self storage, moving day should be simple. All you will need to do is call the storage/moving company to pick up your unit, then drive over separately to your new home. If, on the other hand, you plan to use regular moving or storage services, set aside several days to load and unload. Chances are, you will need the extra time.
Need More Space in Your Self Storage Unit
Posted by admin on Dec 2, 2008
At some point in your life, you may happen upon an occasion where you need a self storage solution. The reasons that people find themselves in need of self storage are infinite. It does not matter if you are moving, need a place to store your collectibles, going through a divorce, or building a new home, self storage is an excellent solution.
When your self storage unit finally arrives, the next task on the list is actually packing it with your belongings. If you approach this task haphazardly, then you will not make the most of your storage space and may end up frustrated that you do not have the space you require. This dilemma can be solved by just a bit of planning prior to even putting the first item in your self storage unit.
One of the first things that you will need to do before packing your storage container is to take inventory. Make a list of everything that needs to be packed in the unit. List all of the things that will need to be stored away in the unit. After you have listed everything, arrange the items on the list in the order that you will require them. Packing items that you will need immediately at the rear of your self storage unit is senseless and will frustrate you to no end.
All of the items you can pack into boxes should be put into boxes. Packing your belongings in this manner will make the job of loading and unloading your self storage unit much more convenient. You should try to choose boxes for packing that are as uniform in size as possible. If you have a lot of books, do not pack them into one large box. It will be virtually impossible to move and the box may rupture. Using smaller boxes to pack your books will be much easier on you physically and also make them easier to transport. Be sure to pack all boxes as full as possible and fill any leftover space with old sheets or newspapers. This will help keep the boxes from collapsing when they are stacked.
With larger self storage units, it helps to leave some space between your boxes and furniture. In this way, you will have quick easy access to the items in your self storage unit when you need them. Also, when you are loading your self storage, make sure that boxes that container heavier items are on the bottom and boxes containing lighter items are on or near the top.
If you keep these tips in mind when loading your self storage container, you will be able to load as many items as possible into the space. When you need to pack away your belongings for a while, self storage is an excellent way to keep them safe and secure. Taking the time to pack your self storage in an organized manner will ensure that you get the most out of your storage space and also ensure that your experience is a pleasant one.
